BHOPAL: Retired IAS officer Rakesh Agrawal, a 1982-batch officer, was found murdered at his residence in Suraj Nagar in Bhopal on Wednesday, sending shock waves through the city’s administrative and civil society circles.

Agrawal was found dead inside his house with a deep cut to his throat. Preliminary information suggests that he was attacked with a sharp-edged weapon.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the murder. A caretaker, who had reportedly been engaged only a few days earlier through an agency, is missing and is being treated as a key suspect.

According to preliminary findings, Agrawal’s wife discovered that the door of her room had been latched from outside early in the morning. She alerted another caretaker, who opened the door. Agrawal was subsequently found dead in his room, which too had reportedly been latched from outside.

The police are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine how the assailant entered and left the premises.

The circumstances inside the house have added another disturbing dimension to the investigation. An LPG cylinder regulator was reportedly found open and the police are examining whether there was an attempt to set the house on fire or destroy evidence. The possibility of robbery is also being investigated.

The missing caretaker is reported to be from Punjab and was brought to the house through an agency. Police are attempting to establish his whereabouts and verify his movements before and after the crime.

Agrawal, a member of the 1982 IAS batch, held several important administrative positions during his career and was known to many in Madhya Pradesh’s administrative establishment.

I knew Rakesh Agrawal well.

He was a thorough gentleman – unassuming, soft-spoken and remarkably down to earth. Despite his long career in the Indian Administrative Service and the important responsibilities he shouldered, there was nothing imposing about him. He was warm, courteous and easy to relate to.

That a person of such gentle disposition should meet such a violent end, inside the safety of his own home, is particularly disturbing.

For those who knew him, the news is difficult to comprehend. For his family, the loss is immeasurable.

The circumstances of his death raise several questions that the investigation must now answer. Who entered the house? What was the motive? What exactly happened in the early hours of the morning? And was the opening of the LPG cylinder part of an attempt to destroy evidence?

The police investigation will have to provide answers.

For now, what remains is the shocking loss of a gentle and dignified man who had spent a lifetime in public service.
