The Russian Sukhoi Su-57 has an eventful history, particularly in India’s defense landscape. India initially invested in its joint development but later withdrew over intellectual property concerns. The decision was further influenced by the then Air Chief, who opposed the program. Instead, for the money already committed, India secured the S-400 surface-to-air missile (SAM) system.
Now, with China supplying its 5th-generation fighters to Pakistan, a pressing question emerges: Is the two-decade-old S-400 system sufficient to counter this evolving threat?
Assessing India’s Air Defense Against Pakistan’s Growing Air Power
With advanced Chinese jets entering Pakistan’s arsenal, India must critically evaluate its air defense posture. The S-400, primarily designed for ballistic missile defense, is undoubtedly a formidable system, but can it fully neutralize the threat posed by stealthy 5th-generation aircraft?
The Need for a 5th-Gen Fighter: Why the F-35 is the Ideal Choice
India’s air power strategy must move beyond relying solely on defensive systems. The ideal solution is acquiring a cutting-edge 5th-generation fighter. The F-35 stands out as the most formidable option—far superior to the Su-57, which, while effective, remains a weaker counterpart. Compared to F-22 Raptor, the F-35, though available, is excessively costly.
Given India’s long and hostile borders with Pakistan, China, and now growing security concerns with Bangladesh, Prime Minister Modi must use his upcoming meeting with Trump to secure an F-35 supply deal. This must happen urgently—delays will be costly, especially as the world moves towards 6th-generation fighter aircraft.
Revamping India’s Defense R&D for Self-Reliance
Beyond immediate acquisitions, India must overhaul its defense R&D ecosystem, ensuring accountability and faster service entry of indigenous defense products. A self-reliant approach, coupled with strategic foreign acquisitions, is critical to maintaining air superiority in an increasingly volatile geopolitical landscape.
Act Now
The S-400 is a capable system, but it cannot be India’s only line of defense against 5th-generation threats. Without a world-class fighter in its fleet, India risks falling behind. The time to act is now.
