New Delhi: The no-confidence motion brought against the Narendra Modi government met with a decisive defeat in Parliament on Thursday 10 August 2023.

The motion, tabled by the opposition parties, aimed to challenge the government’s policies and performance on various fronts. However, after a lengthy and impassioned debate, the motion failed to garner enough support, reflecting the majority strength of the ruling NDA alliance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address during the debate, said the Opposition has never understood the North-East and asserted that peace will be restored in Manipur. He defended his government’s record, highlighting economic growth, infrastructure development, and social welfare programs. He went on to emphasise the need for stability and continuity, especially in the face of ongoing challenges.

In his comprehensive response to the no-confidence motion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, launched a scathing attack on the Nehru-Gandhi family by saying they also took the Gandhi surname. Squarely targetting the opposition, he said: “you have betrayed the trust of the people”.

The PM took the Opposition head-on on issues like corruption and dynastic rule, while reiterating his government’s commitment to the welfare of the nation.

Addressing concerns raised by the opposition, the Prime Minister asserted that the government is dedicated to addressing economic challenges, ensuring social justice, and bolstering India’s position on the global stage. He also highlighted the strides made in infrastructure development, healthcare, and rural electrification.

Home Minister Amit Shah, while addressing the Manipur situation during the debate, acknowledged the complexities of addressing regional issues. He reassured the Parliament that the government is committed to upholding the state’s interests and maintaining peace. He pointed out the ongoing dialogues with stakeholders and efforts to find an amicable solution to the concerns raised by the Manipur community. The Home Minister also underscored the importance of maintaining law and order while respecting the region’s unique cultural and historical aspects.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s response highlighted the government’s achievements and commitments. Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the Manipur situation with a focus on dialogue and peace.

The opposition, led by various parties, criticized the government for issues ranging from handling of the economy to concerns about press freedom and farmers’ protests.

Political analysts suggest that the failed no-confidence motion is unlikely to significantly impact the Modi government’s trajectory. However, the way the Opposition members staged a walkout on Thursday and gave up the chance to reply to the PM’s speech, does serve as a reminder of the need for healthy democratic debate and accountability on the part of the elected representatives.

In the aftermath of this parliamentary session, attention now turns to upcoming legislative agendas and policy decisions. The government’s ability to navigate these matters will be closely watched, as will the opposition’s attempts to hold it accountable.

To sum up, the no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government has been defeated in the Indian Parliament. While the opposition raised concerns and criticisms, the ruling party’s majority ensured the motion’s failure.
