Bhopal: The Opposition parties are creating unnecessary controversy over the ‘Sengol’, the historic symbol of authority, righteosness and justice with fairness from Tamil Nadu, that will be installed in the new Parliament building during its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday 28 May 2023.

Sengol is a gold-plated mace that was handed over to the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru as symbol of power on 14 August 1947. Near midnight that same Day, Prime Minister Nehru delivered his historic speech to the nation in the Constituent Assembly Hall – “Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny….”

It’s entirely a different matter that this Sengol was later shifted at Nehru’s behest and kept at Allahabad Museum with a placard describing it as a “walking stick”.

The then President of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma presented “Adhikar Dand” (mace) to Speaker of Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Shriniwas Tiwari during the inaugural ceremony of new Madhya Pradesh Assembly building on 3 August 1996. Also seen in Photo (l to r) are the then leader of Opposition in the Assembly Vikram Verma, Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, State Governor Mohd Shafi Qureshi, and the first lady Mrs Vimla Sharma

While many opposition parties and their leaders are in the boycott mode and describing the Sengol as a relic of monarchy and “Manuwadi” tradition, one would like to draw attention to the presentation of the mace i.e., “Adhikar Dand” by the then President of India Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma to the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker Shrinivas Tiwari during the inauguration of the new Assembly building in August 1996. The President said that our Parliamentary system is based on tradition just like the British Parliament. The Adhikar Dand, he said is not a symbol of monarchy but a symbol of parliamentary democracy. The Parliament and Legislature draw their power from the people whose representatives sit here. The Arth Dand symbolises the right path, he had added. At this, Congress leader Digvijay Singh was the State Chief Minister.
