Dhaka: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Motiur Rahman Nizami was hanged today for crimes committed during the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war. He was also charged for arms trafficking in the state of Assam in India.
Nizami, who headed the Jamaat-e-Islami party, was hanged at Dhaka Central jail around midnight. He was sentenced to death in 2014 for war crimes in 1971 liberation war of Bangladesh by the international Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh.
Nizami’s hanging was cheered by a a large crowd that gathered outside the jail.
Nizami was earlier a legislator and minister from 2001 to 2006 when opposition leader Khaleda Zia was Prime Minister.
Jamaat-e-Islami has reacted strongly against Nizami’s hanging and called for a strike across Bangladesh on Wednesday.
