India’s Supreme Court will be hearing today a plea for handing over the probe in the massive Vyapam scam of Madhya Pradesh, which is linked with medical admissions and recruitment for certain categories of government jobs.
The Jabalpur High Court earlier on 7 July defered hearing on State Government’s application to transfer the Vyapam case from the Special Task Force of State Police supervised by a High Court appointed Special Investigation Team. The Government plea for handingover the Vyapam case to the CBI came after State Chief Minister Shivraj Sngh was in the eye of the storm and pressure was mounting on him for a CBI probe following the death of prominent TV journalist Akshay Singh in Jhabua in western Madhya Pradesh where he had gone to interview the father of Namrata Damor, a second year medical student, whose body was found on a railway track in January 2012. She was allegedly linked with the Vyapam scam. Within 24 hours of Akshay’s death, the dean of Jabalpur Medical College Dr. Arun Sharma was found dead in a hotel room in Delhi. He was linked with the Vyapam investigations in his position as Dean. One of his predecessors, the former dean of the same college was burnt to death under mysterious circumstances last year.
